Start Construction of Hai Phong International Gateway Port

Vietnam seaport strategy until 2020 which was approved with the objective to build Vietnam into a country strong in marine economic, making profit from the sea, the marine economic will contribute about 53-55% of the total GDP of the Nation. In order to implement the above objective, the marine economic was required to focus on investment and construction of modern port as well as developing the synchronous infrastructure behind port. Resolution No. 27/2007/NQ-CP dated 30th May 2007 of the Government’s Action Plan  has pointed out: to ensure rapid development, sustainable for potential economic sectors, need to focus in port construction in the short term.

On 14th April 2013, at Hai Phong city, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung issued an order to start the construction of the Hai Phong International Gateway Port.

Hai Phong International Gateway Port project has the wharf size with a total length of 750 metres and full of  modern cargo-handling equipment and infrastructure (maritime channel, turning basins, breakwaters, sand dikes, the street outside the port, embellished and treatment of soft ground, other auxiliary works…), capable of handling 100,000 – tonne container ships. The Project has total investment amount about VND 25 trillion, will be implemented with the method of  Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) by Japan’s ODA fund and goverment budget.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung highlighted the importance of the strategy of Vietnam seaport in identified the objective to the year 2020 to make Vietnam become strong nation about the marine economic and making profit from the sea. In particular, Hai Phong International Gateway Port is an important project for the economic and social development of Hai Phong City and the Northern region.

Thus, Hai Phong International Port project has been constructed after 9 years of  preparation, including 4 years to completed study of detailed planning, 3 years of research formulation, appraisal and approval of the project and 2 years of implementation of the detailed design and bidding.

Upon completion (scheduled for completion in 2016), Hai Phong International Gateway Port will decompress part of cargo throughput demand in this area. According to the forecast, cargo volume throughput in northern port is 146-176 million tons / year  to the year 2020. Meanwhile, total capacity of the existing ports even after the upgrade, expansion are only 86-90 million tonnes in 2015 and can not be developed further.
